DEPM 622- The Business of Distance Education and E-Learning
Course Reflection and Learning Journal
Module 1-The Global Knowledge Economy
Week 1
In comparison to any other graduate class I’ve previously taken thus far, the first week of this program appeared to be very intensive. The introduction to my peers, the overwhelming feeling, extensive material, mixture of anxiety and eagerness to learn seemed to be too much. After reviewing the syllabus, I knew I was up for yet another challenging and busy semester.
As the session progressed through the first week and I began my readings and research Peter E Ducker’s article was very intriguing and interesting. I’ve learnt that a business cannot be defined in retrospect to solely gaining a profit. This explanation stood out to me the most and allowed me to examine the definition of a business and its purpose. It is often believed that a business is mainly for profit but I’ve learnt this is merely not the case but to create customers.
Another great scholar was Milton Greenburg, with his ironic perspectives and savvy writing style made me look at my views in a different light. His article encouraged me to read, learn and enjoy a topic, which I lack, expertize in. His debate showed ways to improve and accept the fact that business practices were very important. I was then able to grasp the concept of business cases with the aid of the assigned reading materials and the tutorial provided.
According to the business case tutorial, “a business case is a business plan that explains a new initiative or project inside an existing company. Its purpose is to justify a specific investment of funds and the audience is the company's board of directors and senior management." Now, I’ve learnt what a business case is and can gradually grow and expand my knowledge within this class.
Week 2
This week the conference and discussion thread has been relatively slow with minimum interaction. This is not common at all in comparison to other classes that I’ve completed.
Nonetheless, it was discussed and agreed that most academics are opposed to describing education as a business. But it was agreed that a university is a business and their customers are the students. This is only the case because of a vast number of higher education institutions today. One of my peers initiated that the product is the course, and that the student is the customer.
Professor Donald Olcott Jr, stated, “Education in the U.S. is actually a state function and you will not find the word education in the U.S. Constitution.” This cleared up any misconception that I had and I learnt most universities receive federal student aid, research, and grant programs as part of their funding.
Week 3
The pace speed up a bit for me this week. Updating my learning journal, meeting deadlines for the assignment and conclusion of Module 1. Yay, I finally got the grasp and the concept of the proposal for a business case, yet still a bit confused. However, I got reassurance that I would soon understand the concepts better as I proceed in the class. Some valuable feedback were provided from both instructors and teaching assistant. All have been quite fabulous thus far.
As part of assignment one, I am arguing for a business case proposal that targets four middle schools in the state of Mississippi. The initial focus in year one will be Ruleville, Carver, W A Higgins and George W Carver Middle Schools. These schools proved to have the lowest achieving scores in recent years. For the sole purpose of the assignment, discussion will be made about M&S-Success Enterprise and its new, innovative and growing business process through the lenses of The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) scores. The focus and priority will be on the AYP scores, which is measured and mandated by the government.
Initially, the goal was to help middle school students by creating an online website. This website will allow students to log on and be connected with a teacher to help them with their homework assignments, especially those “latch key kids.” But with the feedback, informal interview with my manager, colleagues, parents and students/stakeholders, the assignment geared me in a slightly different direction. I wanted to find a group of individuals in dyer need and so I decided to change my initial purpose. As a result I have the conception and application for tutoring four of the Mississppi’s middle state school students since they seemed to be the perfect candidate for this project.
Lastly, I will be following the business trend of UWI @UWI_StAugustine. It’s about time I get entwined with my roots.
Module 2- Meeting the Demand
Week 4
I had the opportunity to reflect on the work that I had done for this week thus far. I did fairly well on my first assignment on my initial business case but would have liked to do better. Despite the generalization and content, I was able to learn and develop my concept and I hope to do much better on the second assignment. The feedback and rubric I obtained will help eliminate any misunderstanding and assist with successfully completing this class.
Week 5
The work plan and template provided by the instructors were quite helpful in collaborating assignment two since I have never done a business case before. It was a fantastic road map used for planning out the details of my paper and I do not believe I would have been able succeed without it.
The discussion board was sectioned into several topics such as who are customers in education? This was later linked to stakeholders. I had the opportunity to think about my business case and who were the stakeholders and their interests. Other topics included accessing market demand and the characteristics my business proposals’ market segment and demand. One of my peers posted earlier in the discussion and because of her posts I was able to grasp the concept and respond to her position on the topics accordingly.
Week 6
I must admit that my biggest pet peeve has been the fact that some discussions are usually in abundance, the weekend prior to final grading. This is not fair or good for participation and interaction. Its near submission of assignment and I find myself not wanting to comment on these posts since my main focus is on submitting all assignments by the deadline. I would wish or like to see these done earlier in the week and not a day or two prior, so that I can take full advantage of enhancing my knowledge and learning from my peers.
Let me also not forget to give the teaching assistance/ writing coach, her praise!!! Brenda yet again has been very detailed and her extensive critique of my paper was very helpful as well. Her comments helped me to strengthen my arguments for my proposed business case.
This week kept me very busy, overwhelmed and challenged. I am glad I did the majority of my work prior and didn't procrastinate. I understand that anything in life worth achieving is never easy and once there is a will there will be a way. I struggled with meeting deadlines this week and had Wi-Fi/Internet issues but I am happy to say I got everything done in a timely manner. A little late but I was quite appreciative of Lisa’s kind words of encouragement and understanding.
I gathered some data as suggested and created a permission slip and accommodation form, which allows student to participate in my program (Appendix A). A student technology survey that can be found as part of my Appendix B http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/55FTCVZ

While following the University of the West Indies (UWI), I’ve learnt that as part of their student opportunities, they offer clubs and recreation activities and not only degree and development programs. UWI has been looking at ways to increase public access to university qualifications. This is done through the evolution of UWI open campus and the hope of increasing access to underserved communities of the Eastern Caribbean.
Lastly, I am interested to see how the financial aspect will play out in my business proposal in the next couple weeks!!!
Module 3-Differentiation and Competition
Week 7
All the articles presented in module three were very interesting and I must admit, the interaction in the class forum grew, sooner rather than later in week 7.
However, one of the articles I read, which stood out the most was written by Simon Marginson, in his 2009 editorial on “The limits of market reform in higher education.” The author argued his case very well and outlined that higher education cannot truly be referred to as a business because of both economic and social characteristics and its complexity within HE institutions. He discusses the issues that exist not only nationally but globally as well and in my opinion his views were quite compelling and a sound argument against the conception of HE as a business. Despite (Marginson, 2009) having a captivating argument, while reflecting upon my understating of distance education and e-learning as a business, I still consider DE or education in general as a business. Which brings me back to Peter E Duckers article, where he discussed a business cannot be defined in retrospect to solely gaining a profit but to maintain customers. With that said, institutions do offer a product which is education and this creates customers for private, public, profit or non-profit organizations.

Week 8
I have been following the University of the West Indies (UWI) on twitter. The institution often distributes newsletters each week on events that will occur on campus. Interestingly enough, the hot top was on “mobile technology” and the Faculty of the Engineering department hosted a seminar to not only educate the students but to get feedback by conducting survey and data collection for the advancement in mobile learning.
Week 9
While following UWI on twitter this week, the latest promotion was the student exchange program now being offered. Students have the opportunity to study abroad and obtain scholarships. I find this to be very exciting and interesting, not only will students develop their knowledge but experiencing different cultures while receiving an education at the same time.
This week I worked on my third assignment and was a bit confused as usual since I never did a business case, model nor financial plan prior, so grasping the direction of how to structure my paper was again overwhelming, just as the previous assignment and also a bit time consuming. Trying to find appropriate and relevant research to assist with my argument, that to was a challenge but I hope I was able to get it right this time. The extensive feedback and support from Don and Brenda and the reference made to me by Lisa about the Standing Stones Consulting article, all helped with the development on my assignment. I also went back to the “business case tutorial” to obtain a better understating. Sadly, I found more information than expected this week, which I could have used in my previous assignment. Despite it being too late, I hope to strengthen my final case and use the knowledge obtained in the future as I hope to grow from one year in this education industry to more and more years to come.
Lastly, my elevator pitch is as follows:
M&S- Success Enterprise is a new venture and not for profit organization that seeks to develop enrichment opportunities through an after school blended learning environment with the use of technology, integrated into teaching and learning; to raise both math and writing performances. The program has an advisory board and a good leader who have skills in communication and is open minded to feedback and change for the program’s success. After school, students are sometimes unsupervised and spend excessive time watching television, getting into trouble or simply not doing assigned homework. This program has high expectations to provide a safe, positive and academic environment for adolescences while raising literacy levels, beneficial for the district, parents and community to increase global competitiveness.
Module 4-Collaborations, Alliances, and Partnerships
Week 10
I had the privilege of following the University of the West Indies (UWI) from day one of this MDE class. I followed UWI and its trends, significantly but it was quite challenging keeping up with the pace, since I’m not merely a twitter fanatic. However, as I’ve used twitter for my MDE program thus far, I’ve had the opportunity to discover some very interesting articles.
UWI offers a vast amount of student opportunities, more than what meets the eye, on their twitter account. UWI has been looking at ways to increase public access to university qualifications through a means of open campus and enrollment. Others opportunities offered were scholarships and student exchange programs.
The university hasn’t truly evolved or changed drastically over the twelve weeks I followed their trend, but I only observed a daily yet steady development for student interaction and support. The university was lead in a manner to remain competitive in today’s educational market.
UWI is a very diverse organization and their leadership team defiantly works hard on maintaining culture among its students. Just this week they had an Indian, African and the Caribbean musical program.
“Since its inception in 1948, the UWI has evolved from fledging college in Jamaica with 33 students to a full fledged, regional University with well over 40,000 students” (UWI, 2014). UWI has come a very long way and is considered the largest higher education institution in the Commonwealth Caribbean (UWI, 2014)

Week 11
Module 4, the readings and discussions presented the importance of partnerships required for institutions to survive. Not only in DE but all educational facilities in the world. More importantly I see the need for effective leaders and the importance of their role, and how DEPM 604, leadership and management class is tied in with this MDE course.
This module made me look at my business case, in a slightly different light and I see the need for my partners in my business as a long-term goal. This aspect and its significance were previously mentioned in my proposal. Partners are required for survival of my after-school program, to meet the demands of my targeted customers and for future development and growth of my company.
As I near the end of this course and reflect on the business of DE, I will say I am eighty-five percent confident in my understanding of the course and its materials. I say this primarily because I am not perfect and there is always room for growth and improvement especially when working full-time and taking two classes. If I did this class alone, I believe I’d gain more knowledge but I take away much more than I originally started with, in this class.
I began with the concept of not even knowing the purpose of a business case. If I had to re-take this class or share what I’ve learnt, I feel that I’m confident enough to be quite successful on explaining or expanding on lessons taught, while conducting a before and after synopsis. The massive research, critique and feedback proved to have strengthened my business case by the increase in grade on my assignment 3.
The objectives listed in Module 4 were achieved while comparing both internal and external institutions. UMUC, American University, UWI, UNISA and OUUK all have significant impact on their customers. Through a variety of partnership, economic and cultural factors, diversity and trends as a whole, some institutions had a more effective management team and strategy than others observed. Similarities and differences, pros or cons were noticed between these developed and developing countries.
Week 12
I am extremely exhausted and cant wait for my two weeks of relaxation before my other classes begin in the summer. It will be truly nice to just sit back and have some personal time with both friends and family who I merely neglected these twelve weeks. Not having to run from work to meet deadlines or my mind often racing about having assignments or discussion posts to get done. It would have also been ideal to not have to do a reflection after all that hard work and preparation for my presentation but its good to give feedback plus we are instructed to do so and it is part of my grade.
I took this class DEPM 622 because it is required for my program. This class gave me additional knowledge and allowed me to observe the connection among the various theories or practices that exist both past and present. This class has been a great attribute to what I have already learnt and the presentations were phenomenal. Each of my peer’s business case varied while trying to prove their proposal and its purpose. They all showed a sense of individualism and I also observed how they all tried to connect lessons learnt from the threads, assignments and materials provided.
The only thing I would have liked to see in this course was videos of actual business cases or presentations. I am a very visual person and found myself very confused and frustrated since this was all new to me. Nonetheless, overall it was a great course.
