OMDE 606
Costs and Economics of Distance Education & E-Learning
Course Reflection and Learning Journal
OMDE 606 Reflection & Learning Journal- Introduction and elaboration of the course:
OMDE 606 examines the economics within distance education. Cost and effectiveness analysis is used and its importance was shown within the distance education environment.
Within the first couple weeks of the class, the main focus was on the topic, “Is Education a good thing.” The debate allowed everyone to loosen up a bit, in the beginning of the course and the professor (Thomas Huelsmann) had the class divided into two parts: the proponent and the opponents. In this module, we had the freedom to discuss our own life experiences with the use of data and analysis to prove our rebuttal or agreement, whichever way we deemed fit. Some of the negative viewpoints discussed were: the loans students would spend a lifetime repaying and an individual not being guaranteed a job after graduation. The class was very energetic and everyone seemed excited to share and learn from each other in this situated learning environment.
This course made me realize and also made me learn to accept the importance of time management. I felt overwhelmed at times and had some struggles when I initially started but the way the professor used his teaching ability to simplify the content with the use of humor and engagement, lets not forget empathy as well; I was then less afraid and frustrated as time proceeded.
OMDE 606 has been quite challenging for me and has been the tougher of the two classes Itook for this semester. It is always easier to give up and just to drop out, even though I felt like I would fail. But I was determined to give it my all to the very end, to the best of my ability while juggling a fulltime job and taking another class at the same time. Having no teaching or financial background and allowing myself to become comfortable with excel was very new to me. It was so tough, the work was steady and I was busy at all times.
I enjoyed learning the difference between fixed, variable costs and break even points; some of which I was able to compare with that of developing countries and other online institutions which made me feel like I accomplished a better understanding and became a little more proficient in the topic of economics than when I initially started the class.
Other topics of the course cost showed structure for a six-year period as: Staffing (Fixed and Developing), Development and Production, Maintenance (Material Printing),Presentation Costs, and Income etc.
There were many distance learning applications or systems we also examined that are utilized to educate. My group absorbed the Moodle learning management system (LMS),as one of the many coursewares utilized in distance learning (DL) programs. We believed it was one of the best program/application used in distance learning (DL) as part of our third assignment. Most LMS program or web 2.0 and other online applications help promotepedagogy or teaching and technology for students and they will benefit from both aspects to further their education successfully. As part of the group assignment we were asked to complete a cost analysis of our choice where I was able to feel like I then gained the wealth of the knowledge since I was responsible for the project overview. I was now able to show off what I truly learned since I wasn’t able to do so on my second assignment.
I documented our findings with the use of relevant articles and added flavor to the literature. “Moodle on the Rise” in my opinion was such a snappy name and we had humorousnames for each member of the group and the section they contributed to. We had the“power point guru”, “spreadsheet magician” and I was the “over view specialist.” Thenames were edited as one of my peers didn’t like the concept and as a group and team player we have to agree to dis-agree thus changes were made.
Lastly, the highlight of this program was having the opportunity to chitchat with visiting researcher/author. Greville Rumble brought a wealth of expertise from his paper on social justice to effective teaching to MOOC’s and MOON’s and human capitol theory. He was not only able to discuss his own work but because of his experience within distance education he was able to accommodate the class with a wealth of knowledge. The topics discussed within OMDE 606 collectively included, the economics of education, the techniques of cost analysis, cost effectiveness of distance education, cost and costing of e-learning, cost and economics of students and web 2.0.
